Initially inspired as an evolution of the WINGFISH to handle hollower and bigger waves whilst I was away on a weekend trip away down to the Gold Coast and infamous Snapper Rocks – the 6-8ft swell was pumping, sweep was next-level insane and after an embarrassing surf, I was left feeling completely out of my depth on my regular short board –

Find out what I needed

Ok, so that was me, but what’s the moral of the story?

On both occasions , I severely under-estimated the waves, currents conditions and my lack of preparation with my equipment coupled with my personal physical circumstances surrounding fitness and agility, all conspired to work against me to provide the perfect “KOOK” experience for me personally.

What I omitted to tell you, there were surfers getting seriously good waves , clean, stylish , controlled and perfectly in rhythm with the waves… they were all on these hybrid-style boards, but gliding in easily. Why not me?

Well, I told you about going back to the apartment to “decompress”.. well, I did just that. I flung open my laptop, opened my design program I use ( have so for the last 14+ years)And started thinking of everything that had just unfolded over the last week that led me to this position. What were the main issues that I needed to consider?

My fitness and strength level

The conditions – Type of waves to be surfed.

Board Dimensions & overall Volume

1. I realised I am not the fittest I could be, but my 5’10 works really well at my local beachie ( 3-4ft)  so I know I need to loose a few kgs , but man that’s hard at my age!

2. The conditions were different, we had strong sweeps and heavy strong swells with relentless energy…

3. My board has stayed the same … my regular 5’10 flow-rider model.

The solution

So, what did I need? Given that:

A) I couldn’t change my fitness on both those days, C) I had the same board I have surfed regularly but B) the conditions were vastly different to what I usually surf.

The Solution: Given that there were several factors involved the key one was an overall volume increase was needed.

OK, easy…. But where?  Do I Increase thickness throughout? This is how I worked out what I needed for these conditions:I was riding: 30.5L

This,  is what I designed that day for myself:

A longer 6’4 , wider ( yes wider) 19 ¾” x 2 ¾” with a more pulled in tail for the waves speed and power, but all the volume upfront to deal with the relentless sweep and current and get into the waves easily… I should have called this model “2-Stroke” 😊

Oh, and it’s a 5-fin set-up too…. Heaps of surfing options to play with too.

So, the next time I must surf these conditions, I’m prepared!

We are evolving daily, our surf-conditions constantly vary, and we must always understand that your boards are an extension of you, and where you are, at a moment in time.

Hear from Our Happy Surfers

"Good to hear Dean is back shapping! We definitely wanted to get one of these boards going! "

Good to hear Dean's back shaping so we were like well, definitely want to get one of these boards going so we got Heath here involved in the process, we went online, had a chat with Dean, we had a phone call with Dean and then we sent Dean some videos which was a pretty cool process and then Dean sent us back an awesome video and then the kids, we managed to like sit down and go through the whole process - so you guys were really involved weren't you?

Yeah… So look, the process has been great, got a couple of boards, one for Livy as well and we actually got one of Dean's boards, to test the size and go and try which is pretty good, so we could try the size that you wanted… so, the process has been really good, we've been pretty stoked"- Jurie
